January can be a tough nut to crack. The festive glow has dimmed, the weather is a relentless blend of cold and wet, and daylight seems more like a fleeting guest than a dependable friend. For millions across the UK, this dreary trifecta fuels Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), leaving people feeling low, tired, and unmotivated. Here in Barnsley, our client Rachel decided to tackle these January Blues head-on with a brilliant idea; a comedy night with a purpose.
Rachel’s mission was simple yet profound: to lift spirits, spread awareness about SAD, and raise funds for a mental health charity. What better way to do that than with the healing power of laughter—and a hearty, comforting feast from Hog Roast Penistone? Our team was thrilled to be part of such an important event, and we had a blast serving up a delicious meal to Rachel’s 350 guests.
As the comedy kicked off, Hog Roast Penistone made sure every guest was treated to a plate of mouthwatering hog roast goodness. Our bamboo plates were piled high with soft gluten-free or wholemeal buns filled with tender pulled pork, crispy crackling, sage and onion stuffing, and a dollop of applesauce. For our vegan friends, we offered BBQ-pulled jackfruit rolls with plant-based ‘slaw. Alongside these scrumptious mains, we served a colourful heritage tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad, seasonal leaves, and roasted new potatoes with garlic and rosemary, all rounded off with homemade gourmet coleslaw tossed in a zesty lemon mayo.
As the comedians took to the stage, the room filled with laughter – hearty, contagious, and exactly the kind of energy January so desperately needs. Guests roared at punchlines while savouring the decadent flavours on their plates. The seamless blend of good food and great humour was a hit, and the joy in the air was palpable.
The night didn’t stop at laughter and delicious food. A raffle added an extra layer of excitement, while Hog Roast Penistone’s desserts, comprising rich profiteroles and fluffy individual cheesecakes ensured every guest left with a sweet memory.
Thanks to Rachel’s efforts, the event was a tremendous success, raising over £3,000 for charity. It was a night full of laughter, delicious food, and, most importantly, raising awareness about an issue that affects so many. Here’s to beating the blues—one hog roast roll at a time!
