Saying goodbye to a loved one is never easy, especially when you’re left with the difficult task of organising the funeral and wake. At Hog Roast Wilthorpe, we understand the emotional weight that comes with this responsibility. That’s why we’re here to provide compassionate catering for celebrations of life across Barnsley, helping take some of the stress out of the process.
Recently, we had the privilege of helping Isla, who tragically lost her dad, Alan, earlier this month. After finalising the funeral arrangements, Isla came to us looking for a unique, non-traditional meal for the wake. She shared fond stories of her dad, who had an infectious sense of humour and was always quick with a joke to brighten up a room. We wanted to honour Alan’s memory with something truly special, and when Isla mentioned he had lived in Texas for a few years, we knew exactly what would be a fitting tribute: The Southern Slow Roast Menu.
Inspired by the rich flavours of Deep Southern cuisine, this spread was perfect for the occasion. Isla agreed immediately, and we got to work creating a feast that would honour Alan’s memory while providing comfort to those who gathered to celebrate his life.
In the hours leading up to the wake, Hog Roast Wilthorpe slow-roasted tender, pre-marinated meats, including Texas 24 beef brisket, Cajun-spiced whole roast chickens, and pulled quarter-minted lamb. For vegan guests, we offered BBQ-pulled jackfruit rolls—a delicious, plant-based alternative. To complement the main dishes, we served buttery corn cobbettes, Memphis-style crunchy coleslaw, and roasted baby potatoes, all prepared to perfection.
When guests arrived, the fragrant, mouth-watering spread was ready, and the response was immediate—laughter, memories, and conversations sparked by the delicious food, all reminiscent of Alan’s joyful personality. Isla was incredibly pleased with the service we provided, and we were so glad we could help her through this difficult time.
As the event came to a close, our team made sure everything was taken care of. We cleared away the plates, packed up the leftovers, and, as per Isla’s request, donated the remaining food to the care home that had cared for her father.
Hog Roast Wilthorpe was honoured to play a small part in such a personal and meaningful day, and we’re always here to help when you need us most.
